Radium in drinking water
The Village of Western Springs has been notified by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) of levels of radium in the village's drinking water that exceeded radium standards. These samples were rated at an annual average of 6.06 picocuries per liter, exceeding the agency's standard of 5 pCi/L.
Radium can be found in public and private wells and cannot be seen, smelled or tasted in drinking water. High levels in Illinois are mostly seen in the northern portion of the state, as radium is found in the granite bedrock of many aquifers where water is drawn from.
What are the health effects of radium found in water?
Radium in water can pose health issues when the water is ingested. When radium is absorbed in the body it behaves similarly to calcium, deposited in tissue in the body such as bone. This deposited radium can damage the tissue and lead to health problems such as:
  • Anemia
  • Fractured teeth
  • Bone deterioration
  • Cataracts
  • Liver, bone or breast cancer
  • Developmental effects for children and pregnant women
